THe Diatom Flora of Australia
The Diatom Flora of Australia series is a taxonomy guide by Dr Jacob John covering different freshwater Diatom species found across various climatic regions in Australia. I have been lucky enough to be part of the publication since 2015.
Diatoms are a group of microalgae found in waterbodies across the world. The cell walls are made of silica that forms intricate patterns. Diatoms are important because they produce 20-30% of the oxygen we breath.
Three of the five volumes are currently available:
We received the 2022 Gerald W. Prescott Award from the Phycology Association of America for our third volume Diatom Flora of arid Australia: Taxonomy and Biogeography.
